Friends & Neighbors in the American Northeast

About

I'm Tom Kershaw, a designer and photographer based on the north shore of Boston. My work spans brand, digital, and creative direction — but portraiture has always been at the center of my photography practice. During my years at IDEO I developed a particular feel for capturing people in unguarded moments, photographing research subjects across the country in a way that was honest, quick to establish trust, and attentive to who a person actually is.

Friends & Neighbors in the American Northeast draws on that experience and turns it toward home. Instead of traveling somewhere to document strangers, I'm photographing the people I already know — neighbors, regulars, familiar faces. Teachers, mechanics, retirees, students, baristas. Anyone who says yes.

These are everyday people, seen in a way that makes you stop and actually look at them.

I'm actively looking for subjects. If you live or work on the north shore and want to be part of it, I'd love to hear from you.
